“WHO ARE YOU?”
Who are you? What do you do? What do you represent? LSCA...what?
Let
me begin by saying that I represent you- our executive board represents
you. If we no longer existed, would anyone notice?
I ask you these questions because I want you to think about your answers. Some of us might not be too happy with some of the answers we give to the questions above. It’s about that time! It’s time for us to get noticed- as professional school counselors - for what we do on a daily basis. We have so many terrific and hard working professional school counselors- let us make it known!
I am very excited about this year! LSCA’s focus for this year involves promoting ourselves and our professions. We know how significant we are in children’s lives; we now need to work on “projecting” that to the public. Recently, discussions about social workers and psychologists taking our jobs have increased. Is that fair? Do they do more than us? Well, that’s up for debate, but they certainly know how to “brag” about themselves and their professions. Do you brag?
I have come to realize that some counselors, including myself, have a very difficult time doing this. Our ability to move forward, including a smaller student to counselor ratio, and decreasing, if not eliminating administrative tasks in the schools, depends on how well we can brag about the wonderful and effective things we are doing in our schools. In the end, we need to take advantage of the bragging opportunities. If you think you might have a difficult time with this, follow my lead…TOGETHER we CAN and WILL move mountains! Let’s do this together, all the way to the top!
